West Melton resident and ‘Bootcamp with Kaz’ founder Karen Hulston has come away from the NZ Fitness Awards winning the Programme of Excellence Award for her years of physical training efforts.
Karen was the first female to gain entrance into the NZ Army Physical Training Corps and became a physical training instructor at the Burnham base.
“I left the army as I have four children and I then gained 30kg and had fallen into a huge rut. I designed myself a programme to get back on track, and that is the programme I won the excellence award for. I wanted to help others as well so started running boot camps at the West Melton domain and school. We then built an exercise shed on our property, and I now run ‘Boot camp with Kaz’ there.”
Karen has been in the health and fitness industry for more than 20 years and has run her boot camps for five years. She was also a finalist in the Small Group Trainer category of the awards.
“There was some good competition, and other finalists were from fabulous gyms, and their programmes were quite unique. I love helping people reach their full physical potential and seeing someone arrive with no energy and unable to do a press up or run and then suddenly can play soccer with the children or help hubby with their work. I love seeing people get back into being able to live to their full physical potential and doing things they love to do.
“Being a part of the awards was a fantastic opportunity and being recognised for all the hard work was amazing — it is the biggest achievement in my career.”
