Award-winning book supports SPCA

Elyse Kerr and Bridget Leach with their award

Two Darfield High School Students have won the prestigious XCHC YES Excellence Award for Customer and Market Engagements at this year’s Lion Foundation Young Enterprise regional final.

Bridget Leach and Elyse Kerr, both year 13 students at the school, and acting under the corporate entity Anover, won the award for the fundraising project they created to support the SPCA.

The pair created a colouring book — Cupcake and Friends — that has images to colour and real-life stories of animals the SPCA has rescued. The book has been published and is now on sale.
Elyse Kerr said they choose the SPCA because animals are close to their hearts.

“Both of us are proud owners of rescue animals, and we are passionate about helping any animal that is the same position our pets were.

“After getting in touch with the SPCA, Cupcake and Friends was born.”

Caroline Harrington, who teaches commerce at Darfield High School, said that Bridget and Elyse showed huge determination and self-drive to run their own business.

“They challenged themselves and took advice when required. In creating a colouring book, they have come up with a fun and interactive way to educate children on how to care and treat animals and pets, as well as raise funds for Canterbury SPCA.”

XCHC’s operations manager, Preston Hegel, who presented the award, said he remembers the project because it was so real.

“I think in a world of media we all want a stronger connection to the things around us. Anover uses real-life stories from animals that have been saved by the SPCA, and though the product is for young people, it also educates adults and is an excellent way for every family member, even grandparents, to spend productive and fun time with little ones.

Cupcake and Friends can be purchased through Anover’s Facebook page or on their Storbie page anover.mystorbie.com. The cost is $15, and 25% of all profits go to Canterbury SPCA.
