Outward Bound scholarships are available for 18 to 26-year-olds living in Selwyn for the November 4 to 24 sailing.

“The scholarship is valued at more than $3,000 with $500 needing to be provided or fundraised by the individual attending,” says Mayor Sam Broughton.

“The course focusses on building confidence, resilience, collaboration, communication and relationship-building skills. I have been able to support a number of people on these 20-day opportunities over the past few years through funding. Outward Bound is a good way to grow as a person and develop better interpersonal skills and build confidence. You learn more about who you are as an individual. It is especially good for young people who have left school and have the time to invest in themselves.

“It has been great seeing the excitement of previous recipients of the scholarship when they find out they are successful. I noticed huge self-confidence and change in them upon their return due to the physical and mental challenges while they are away. They make new friends and seeing their personal growth is the most satisfying.

“If you are interested in this opportunity please write to me with your full name, date of birth, contact details and the reasons why you want to be selected for this opportunity. It is a pretty simple process email sam.broughton@selwyn.govt.nz.”
