Alex Blakie, in the top 0.2 per cent internationally

Remarkable achievement for student

Even in a nation well-used to boxing above its weight, Alex Blakie’s achievement is remarkable.

The year 10 student from Rolleston College recently competed in the international 2019 Maths Championships, run by online digital education provider Education Perfect.

Alex finished a creditable tenth. What makes his achievement remarkable is that it was against 80,000 competitors.

It also earned Alex an elite award in maths as he finished in the top 0.2% internationally. Success in these competitions is no new thing for Alex, but this is far and away his best result, said Rolleston College principal Steve Saville.

“At Rolleston College, learners primarily use Education Perfect to augment their development in maths and languages.

“Some of our learners also take the opportunity to engage in the worldwide championship events in specific curriculum areas.

“Alex is possibly our most committed and enthusiastic participant in these competitions, and he applies himself to all of these events with a real commitment to excel,” Mr Saville said.
