Time4Mums is an opportunity to have a break, and meet new people

Having time out

by Ann van Engelen

Time4Mums Rolleston was established some 15 years ago as a way for parents of young children in the Selwyn community to connect with new people and socialise.

“It is really important for mums and dads to be able to meet other parents, especially if you are new to the area,” says volunteer Cristene Trenuela-Chan.

“I have two children and first came along as a new Rollston community member so I could meet other people. It is a great time for parents and children to build friendships. Many people have established solid friendships through the group.

“We have a creche, so the children are entertained while the adults have time out. We talk about authentic motherly journeys and normalise that motherhood isn’t always perfect. We organise topical guest speakers, craft, coffee and cake. We have dads come along at times as well for a chance of adult conversation and the opportunity to be involved in the craft activity for the day.

“If there is a need for men, we would look at starting a Time4Dads group for talks on a man to man level.

“We are a small group, and when I first attended, I found a sense of belonging. If there is one mother out there who feels isolated, that is what we are here for — we support each other and look forward to meeting new people.

“We have a Time4Mums Rolleston Facebook page and young or old, expectant or new mums and grandparents are welcome to join us.”

Cost is $4 for each family at the Rolleston Community Centre 10am to midday the first and third Wednesday of each month in term time.
