New season begins

The Pioneers of Canterbury marching club is home to many team members from across the Selwyn District that are preparing for the new season.

“We are based in Templeton, and team members come from Rolleston, Darfield and beyond. We have five teams in our club ranging from four-year-olds through to 65- year-olds. There is a team for everybody, and at present, we are coming together preparing to start training for the upcoming year of competing,” says team coach Kylie Dowers.

“Our club has been established for many years, and the senior and masters teams have done very well competing in the past. The seniors took out the New Zealand Championships three seasons in a row, and our masters’ team have won nationals two seasons consecutively.

“The season runs from June until March, and we have around 90 members.

We are seeing a massive increase in numbers and interest in the sport, which is fantastic.

“It is good for people that are not able to play more physical sports like soccer, rugby and you make lifelong friendships. Marching is intense and is a great form of exercise.

“It helps with coordination and discipline, and we travel. We did well amongst our teams when we went to the New Zealand Champs last March with our under 12 grade placing in the Plate section.”

The teams compete every Saturday in local competitions against five other clubs.

“When you join our club, everything is provided for you when you pay your subs, including the uniforms, which are beautiful. We fundraise together, and this makes it very easy and affordable.

“I have three girls age four, eleven and thirteen years old and I march as well; it is very much a family affair.”
