Daddy and Daughter Time
by Mike Isle
The Selwyn District Council is offering the opportunity for local dads to bond with their daughters but in an unconventional manner.
They are going to show dads how to do their daughter’s hair.
It is the idea of the council’s district programme and learning coordinator Trudi Fraser.
Trudi said she was on the hunt for new programmes and activities for the district’s libraries when she came across the concept of Daddy and Daughter Time, which is popular in American libraries.
One of the most popular of the ‘Times’ was showing dads how to do their daughter’s hair. Trudi said it looked to be fun and popular, so she trialled the programme in Selwyn.
“The trial was a huge success and was sold out.”
Trudi is now hoping to make it a regular feature on the council’s library calendar.
“It’s a great way to foster a healthy, positive and interactive environment to further build a father and daughter relationship,” she said. Each two-hour course, conducted by a professional hairdresser, teaches the basics of hair care and offers some simple styles to try. Upcoming courses include one at the West Melton Community and Recreation Centre on May 16 and another at the Lincoln Library on June 16. Both courses start at 1pm. The cost is $15, which includes a take-home hair care kit.
