Encouraging family golf

by Ann van Engelen

Futures Canterbury Selwyn Golf Hub was launched in February to encourage younger generations and their families to play golf as a sport.

“We hold regular fun team golf and family events for everyone to participate in,” says Play Golf Canterbury coordinator, Pip Deans.

These events are either six or nine holes depending on the age and ability of the players.

“We also have taster coaching programmes and had 25 new people come along last week at Greendale golf course. It is a fun way to learn new skills and get out as a family including grandparents. We had a 20-month-old girl with a small club in her hand and also a three-year-old — there is no age limit.

“We make it fun and are going to ramp up the competition side of things in spring so members can compete against each other. On April 18 we are having competition at Hororata for younger players, and we are hosting a fun day on Sunday, April 28.”
