Fire brigade raising funds

The Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade is holding a Wild West evening to raise funds for the upcoming Sky Tower Stair Challenge, supporting Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

“We encourage people to come along and support this worthy cause, enjoy a social night out and try a ride on the bucking bull,” says joint organiser Blair Jones.

“Five of our team members are competing in the Sky Tower Stair Challenge in Auckland in May. We will climb the 328-metre tower, which is the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. It has 51 flights of stairs with 1,103 individual steps, and we will be wearing up to 25kg of fire brigade kit, and racing 1,000 fellow firefighters from across the country to the top.

“We do the challenge to support the cause. It is great for team bonding and good fitness training.

“It will be a fun night with prizes for best-dressed male and female and the longest ride on the bull. We enjoy involving the community with things we do and showing them what we get up to as they support us. All profits will go towards Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. Tickets are $20 available from the Kirwee Challenge Service Station, pay online via bank account ASB 12-3147-0142058-01 (please put your name as a reference, and you can collect your tickets on the night), or contact Blair on 021 266 3043 or

The Wild West evening is on Friday, March 22, from 6pm at the Kirwee Community Hall 26 High St, Kirwee.
