A mountain biking story
by Ann van Engelen
Darfield residents Kristine and Vince Daly enjoy mountain biking around the region with their family as a way to interact and have quality time together.
“I worked at Annabel’s Educare and would make up songs and stories for the children, and people would say I should write a book,” says Kristine.
“I decided to do something for my grandchildren on our mountain biking adventures that is easy to read and realistic so I wrote Riding the tracks. My niece Joanne Baikie Lang is a copywriter and helped me organise and design it. I sell the books online through my Riding the tracks Facebook page.
The children’s book is a rhyming story about the families’ adventures around the district and beyond.
“I have visited Darfield and Hororata schools explaining to the children why I wrote it and how I got it published. Darfield students were learning how to write a book, so I talked about the structure and the difference between self-publishing and having a publisher.
“Writing the book was an amazing experience and has opened up a lot of discussion for children. A teacher at Sheffield school purchased it, and the pupils discussed the fire in the Port Hills.
“Our family enjoy mountain biking as an activity, and we often go to Christchurch Adventure Park and Victoria Park. They have great tracks for the whole family to enjoy.”
