Rolleston College succeeds at competition

The best of Selwyn’s promising young athletes were on show in the inaugural Selwyn Secondary Schools Athletics Competition held last week at the Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub in Wigram.

Hundreds of athletes proudly representing each of the district’s secondary schools participated in the track and field events, their numbers almost matched by excited and vocal spectators. Lincoln and Darfield high schools and Ellesmere and Rolleston colleges competed in perfect conditions, and organisers report that competition was fierce but in good spirits.

One of those organisers, Rolleston College teacher Athena Evans, said she was thrilled with her school’s representation.

“There were 46 athletes representing Rolleston College, and it was amazing to see our colours in nearly every event and age group.

“They represented the college with pride and integrity, supporting each other and as well as athletes from other schools.

“Not only did Not only did the Rolleston College athletes make us proud with their positive attitudes and behaviour, but also with their results.”

Anthea Evans said that attention was now turning to the 2019 Canterbury Secondary Schools Athletics Championship to be held later this month in which Rolleston College will again be entering a team.
