Love in the park

Selwyn District Council’s Picnic in the Park made for a very special Valentine’s Day at West Melton Domain last Thursday.
Picnics in the parks are a popular part of the council’s Summer in Selwyn programme, and the West Melton leg lived up to expectations with a large crowd flocking to the domain.
The council’s senior events and recreation adviser David Tippett said the aim of the event was to connect people to their community. That was certainly the case in West Melton.
Love was in the air on St Valentine’s Day, and it mixed with lots of laughter and squeals of delight as a big police presence provided by Policeman Rick’s speed camera sprint racing, and Lieutenant Lou’s clown police, entertained family groups.
Other attractions included Pedalmania bikes, garden games, bouncy castles, face painting and live music from Holly Kimber.
“It was great to see everyone being active or relaxing, and most of all enjoying the atmosphere at their local park,” Mr Tippett said.
The council has scheduled four more picnics in the park: Burnham: Thursday, January 21 — Freyberg Domain; Dunsandel: Thursday, February 28 — Dunsandel Domain. Springfield: Thursday, March 7 — Springfield Domain; Prebbleton: Wednesday, March 13 — Prebbleton Community Park.
