Free concerts attract big crowds

A month of Sundays usually means that something is unlikely to happen. For the Selwyn District Council’s innovative Month of Sundays on Lincoln Green, the reverse is the case.
The council, with the help of event sponsor Farringdon Rolleston, is putting on a series of free concerts featuring talented local musicians.
There have been three ‘Sundays’ so far, and there is one to go this coming Sunday to complete the February programme.
Council senior events and recreation adviser David Tippett said the Sundays in the park had been a huge success with plenty on offer.
“What we wanted to do is create an opportunity where families could come along to a brilliant location, listen to local musicians, and enjoy a host of other activities in a relaxing environment.
“We attracted a crowd of 120 in just our second Sunday, and those crowds have been growing since.”
Mr Tippett said 11 bands or soloists would be performing during the four Sundays and there was plenty else on offer, including face painting and garden games. It is the first year the council has held A Month of Sundays, but Mr Tippett says it is unlikely to be the last.
“With the growing attendance, it would be a shame not to bring it back. The [event] provides families an afternoon to relax and unwind, and experience outstanding local talent.”
The next and final Month of Sundays concert for the year is this Sunday, Lincoln Green, starting at 1pm.
