Sheffield bike day out
by Mike Isle
Sheffield Rugby Club is once again running their popular fund-raising mountain bike race, but this year they are running it with a difference — they are inviting people to run it.
The 24-kilometre mountain bike race, which last year attracted 130 cyclists, remains and there is also a more relaxed 12-kilometre option for recreational riders. However, this year for the first time, entrants also have the option of competing in an 11-kilometre trail run.
All three options will run concurrently with the same start location and time.
Club president and event organiser Tom Ferguson says adding the trail run to the annual event was to broaden the appeal and increase entries.
“It is a very important fund-raising event for our club. All proceeds from the mountain bike race go to support the club’s junior teams, and the proceeds from the trail run go toward the Sheffield Cricket Club’s junior sides,” he said.
That is the fourth time the Sheffield Rugby Club has held the event and the good thing about it, Mr Fergusson said, was that it catered to all ages and skill levels. “We are a small club, and very much family orientated; so we can promise you a great day out, whether you are into biking, running or just want to come up and enjoy a superb day out surrounded by superb scenery.”
The event will include cash prizes for category winners plus spot prizes ranging from a scenic helicopter ride for three, through to frozen chickens.
As well as the races, there will barbeques, refreshments and a bouncy castle.
Mr Fergusson said the club recognised that such a large and popular event would not be possible without a high level of support from sponsors.
“We are extremely grateful to them,” he said.
