Selwyn’s Mini and Baby Gyms are back in 2019, and already they are proving their popularity, with many children returning from last year.

The gyms—the Minis, which cater to one to five-year-olds and the Baby Gyms—provide safe, fun and interactive environments for young people to play, dance and engage with each other, with play circuits, music and dance activities all on offer.

Sara Fairbrother has been going to the gyms with her two children Scarlet (two and a half years old) and Mackenzie (10 months) since the family arrived in Selwyn.

She said she and her daughters were really looking forward to the sessions starting at the new West Melton Community and Recreation Centre.

“It’s an awesome programme that you can come along to without having to sign up for a term,” she said.

Rolleston Community Centre instructor Tania Taylor said the gym programmes were designed for children to move in their natural way when they are ready.

“It allows them to self-direct their own learning by empowering them to choose what they want to do.

Parents and caregivers are able to support their children and encourage them by being active participants themselves.”

Ms Taylor said getting children moving and being active is a passion of hers.

“I love watching the connections between children and their parents or caregivers and seeing the joy on their faces when a child accomplishes something new.

“This is not work for me. I love it. I think I am learning more from the children than they are learning from me.”
