St John cadet awards
by Mike Isle
It was a proud night for 10-year-old Tessa Herridge. That was the night she was awarded all 29 available badges at the Rolleston St John Youth awards. Tessa is believed to be the only cadet in New Zealand to receive all the badges in one level.
St John divisional manager, James Batt, said the cadets were an important part of St John, and for young people, it was an ideal organisation to belong to.
“At St John Cadets, we have a lot of fun, we earn badges, and we work hard on providing community service in so many different areas,” he said.
“All our cadets strive to abide by St John values in their everyday lives, and we are very proud of them.”
Mr Batt said St John had “a fabulous turnout” of cadets and their families at the awards evening.
As well as Tessa Herridge’s 29 medals, awards were given to Cameron Moffatt (1,000 Community Hours Shield), Isabelle Walker and William Thompson (Sapphire Shield), and Tayla Wakelin who in 2018 epitomised all of St John values on a daily basis.
