Meet Your Street is back

Meet Your Street is back in town and, as always, is backing the town as we head into summer.

The Selwyn District Council initiative is aimed at bringing neighbours together and welcoming new arrivals to Rolleston.

It is a series of street gatherings, funded by the council, that encourages neighbours to get to know each other. Activities include a free barbecue, music and fun activities for kids.

This is the fourth year the council has ‘put it on’ for the community.

The council’s community development adviser, Jason Flewellen, said Meet Your Street gives long-term residents and new arrivals a great opportunity to meet those living around them.

“We have received great feedback since launching Meet Your Street, and know local communities look forward to it coming to their streets.”

The council has selected 15 locations as host venues for Meet Your Street gatherings and has left open four dates in March for a further four streets to be added, one from each ward. Applications on the council’s website are open now. The four additional streets will be announced in early December.

The gatherings all take place Tuesdays from 5.30 pm and 7pm. The first is on Tuesday, November 6 at Austen Place Rolleston and the final one is on Tuesday, March 26 at a yet to be selected street in the Ellesmere Ward.

The council is also encouraging the community to organise their own street parties in addition to the council-organised events.

Jason Flewellen said a $75 subsidy each event was up for grabs for successful applications. An application form is available on the council’s website
