Scam targets schools

by Mike Isle

Selwyn schools have been put on notice that they may be targeted by an email scam.

Police are investigating the scam, which targets school administration staff who are emailed by a person purporting to be the school’s principal asking them to purchase App Store or iTunes gift cards.

Recipients are told to provide the gift card numbers to the sender by email.

Several schools in Christchurch have received the emails and police have issued a warning for other schools in Canterbury.

They say that scams of this nature can be sophisticated, appear realistic and can often create a sense of urgency.

They advise schools to report any suspicious emails or phone calls to Christchurch police on 03 363 7400.

Selwyn schools contacted by The Record say that they have not yet been hit by the scam, but are aware of it, and staff have been warned to be on the lookout for it.
