Lighting up the skies
by Andy Bryenton
This November the skies will come alive with colour and light, as the good folks from the Rolleston Residents’ Association treat local families to another unforgettable fireworks display. It’s a fun, safe, and affordable way to wow kids of all ages — right up to adult — with stunning pyrotechnics, and this year it’s all taking place at Foster Park on November 3.
“This annual event is run by a group of volunteers from the Rolleston Residents’ Association and representatives from many of our local schools, sporting codes and non-profit groups from the wider Rolleston area,” say the generous organisers. “Apart from celebrating the night safely, and to give the community a family fun night, it is also run to help support all these groups.”
Be sure to catch the local bands and performances onstage as the summer evening draws in and the stars come out. Try some food from the stalls on-site, strike it lucky in a community raffle, or just relax with a picnic dinner. Then be astounded by the artistry of the pyrotechnicians who will fill the sky with rockets and stars for the occasion.
Special thanks go out from the organisers to all the volunteers who help, not just the organising committee but all the volunteers who help their various clubs or organisations on the night. All the money paid at the gate funds the event — a figure, which can top $70,000, and which is not subsidised by the council or government. It is a community celebration by and for the people, and it all begins at 5pm on Saturday, November 3. Bring the kids, bring a blanket and some cushions — but please leave your dogs, glassware and personal fireworks at home, as these are not allowed for safety reasons. Most of all, come prepared to be amazed and to have a good time with the people in your neighbourhood.
