Battling for national honours
by Andy Bryenton
There are few sports as exhilarating to watch as full-noise off-road racing, where drivers pit their own strength and skill — along with up to 650 horsepower — against the toughest of terrain. This Labour Weekend the best of the best converge on Selwyn for the 2018 Off Road Racing National Finals, in a competition which promises a day of thrills.
The Canterbury Off Road Racing Club’s purpose-built Can-Am raceway in West Melton is the venue for this multi-tier clash of the Titans, featuring classes from nimble dirt buggies through to roaring V8 trucks, all piloted by the best in the business.
Bragging rights for the 2018 season are up for grabs as these high-flying vehicles take on the banked turns, bumps and tabletop jumps of the challenging course.
It’s a family day of fun for all those who love racing at its raw and exciting best, with plenty of great spectator views of the entire course. With three heats in each class, the action will be fast and frantic, offering back-to-back races.
There will be refreshments available on-site for those attending, at with a cost of only $10 for an adult and under 15s free, it’s a great day of motorsport for a diminutive cost. Come out and support the local drivers as they take on the best in New Zealand for the title of ‘king of the dirt’ — and witness first-hand the thrills and spills of off-road racing. It all kicks off at 10am on Saturday, October 20, at the Can-Am raceway in Weedons Road, West Melton.
