Town and country bring their best
by Andy Bryenton
It’s a fine old tradition — the best of town and country coming together for a festival of fun, friendly competition and rural pride. A real Kiwi A&P show can’t be beat for a day’s family entertainment, and the forthcoming Ellesmere Show is no exception.
“The Ellesmere A&P Show is a day that the Selwyn district looks forward to annually and this year will be another great community event run by a dedicated and passionate group of volunteers,” says A&P society president, Trevor Hobson. “This year is shaping up to be another well-supported show.
There is something of interest for everyone. All the old favourites return.”
With a tradition stretching back to 1869, those favourites are time-honoured indeed. This year will be the 148th time the show has brought all the fun of the countryside to town, pitching its bright marquees just outside the township of Leeston for a spring celebration. Expect to see hot competition in categories as varied as sheep and shearing, sheepdog trials, pigs, goats, alpaca, horses, produce, baking, homemade wine and beer, photography, handcraft, homespun wool, arts and crafts, cut flowers, floral arrangements, school classes, poultry, grains and seeds, vegetables and many more.
The axes will flash as mighty displays of wood chopping spill the sawdust, the pipes will sound for Highland and National dance displays, and vintage machinery will come to life displaying a slice of our rural heritage. There will be plenty to taste, sample, buy and appreciate, along with live music from pipe and brass bands — and of course, the Grand Parade is a major highlight. Adding to the fun this year are a wearable arts contest, a ‘top team’ challenge and a big Selwyn’s got talent variety show.
Gates open at 8am on Saturday, October 13 at the Ellesmere A&P Showgrounds, Leeston — there’s free parking, and this is most definitely a family event.
Don’t miss out on a day of good old fashioned fun as the best of the country comes to town — make plans to be there and soak up a wonderful spring day of entertainment.
