Heating loan available

Canterbury homeowners can now get a rates advance of up to $6,000 to pay for home heating, insulation and ventilation improvements.
Environment Canterbury announced the advance as part of its Long Term Plan 2018–28.
Deputy chair, Peter Scott, said eligible ratepayers can apply for the advance and pay it back through their rates bill over nine years with interest.
“We are delighted to be able to offer this option and help Cantabrians make their homes warmer, drier and healthier. One of our roles as a regional council is to ensure that the air we breathe supports health and wellbeing, so helping people upgrade to better heating technology is vital to that,” said Mr Scott. The advance carries an interest rate fixed at 5.9% per annum for applications received before July 2019.
Mr Scott said the interest rate covers all costs incurred by Environment Canterbury to run the scheme so that it does not impact other ratepayers.
Applications for the advance are now being accepted on Environment Canterbury’s website: ecan.govt.nz.
Successful applicants must use approved installers. A list of those, several of whom operate in Selwyn, is on the website.
