Selwyn netball champions decided

Greenpark has upset favourites Broadfield to take out the 2018 Selwyn Premier title in a thrilling match at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday.

Broadfield went into the match as the form team after finishing ahead of the pack at the end of the round robin section of the competition and disposing of defending champions Lincoln in the semi-finals.

That form looked to be continuing in the first quarter of the final against Greenpark as it cruised to an 11–9 lead with some fluent play throughout the court.

After a stuttering start, Greenpark upped its game in the second quarter to draw level at the half-time break 22–22.

The third quarter belonged to Greenpark as Broadfield’s cohesion fell away with Greenpark goal shoot, Casey Ashton, dominating the shooting circle despite some aggressive defence. By the end of the quarter, Greenpark had established a four-goal lead, 36–32.

Early in the fourth quarter — Greenpark extended its lead to seven points before a desperate Broadfield roared back into life on the back of a superb display by goal attack Laura Lowe. They closed the gap and with seconds on the clock had drawn level at 44–44.

However, the last say went to Ashton and the Greenpark team as she calmly slotted a last-second goal top secure the match and the title, 45–44.

In the Premier two grade West Melton capped a top season with a fairly comfortable 42–31 win over Southbridge B.
