Waihora remain unbeaten

Waihora has cemented itself to the top of the Ellesmere division one rugby competition with a thumping of cellar-dwellers Hornby on the weekend.

Waihora travelled on Denton Oval for the fixture, and the host side was no match for the table-toppers who ran away with the game 66–19.

Darfield sits second on the points table, four points behind Waihora after it came away with the win in its clash with the combined Burnham Dunsandel Irwell (BDI) side.

Darfield was in control for most of the match, but a late revival from BDI saw it close the gap, however, Darfield held on to take the match and the points, 38–35.

Rolleston held its own for most of the first half against defending champions Southbridge at Rolleston Domain.

Both sides scored a try apiece in the first spell with Southbridge narrowly in front at the half-time break eight points to seven.

However, three second-half tries saw the visitors run away with the match, 29–7, to finish the day in third place on the points table.

Prebbleton holds down the fourth spot with a 35–24 win over West Melton, while Springston kept its play-off hopes alive with a narrow 18–13 win over neighbours Lincoln.

Club rugby takes a break this coming weekend with Ellesmere and North Canterbury rep sides set to clash for the prestigious Southbridge Shield.

Results: Hornby 19 vs 66 Waihora; Springston 18 vs 13 Lincoln; Rolleston 7 vs 29 Southbridge; Darfield 38 vs 35 BDI; Prebbleton 35 vs 24 West Melton.
