Award to local girl

A Rolleston girl has won the highest accolade available from the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Awards.

Rebecca Allan, who is 18, was presented her gold award last month by Christchurch deputy mayor, Andrew Turner, in front of her parents Pamela and Chris Allan.

For her award, Rebecca completed a 70 kilometre, four-day tramp through the Arthur’s Pass National Park, engaged in surfing and running and served in the community supporting underprivileged young people.

Rebecca has also worked for the Salvation Army. Rebecca said it was a great thrill to win the award.

“The awards help young people find their purpose, passion and place in the world,” she said.
Rebecca, who has previously won Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver awards, has been invited to Government House to receive formal congratulations from the Governor-General.
