Matariki in Selwyn

A number of events will be held around Selwyn in to celebrate Matariki, the Maori New Year.

Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, which rise in late May or June. This year it rises on Friday, June 15.

Matariki stories will be screened at Selwyn libraries, including The little Kiwi’s Matariki, Together in Love: A Legend of Matariki, The Seven Kites of Matariki and Daniel’s Matariki Feast.

Kite making sessions take place on Saturday, June 16 from 10.30am to 11.30am at all libraries, and on Wednesday, June 20 at Darfield, Leeston and Lincoln libraries from 3.30pm to 4.30pm, and Rolleston Library from 4pm to 5pm. Star-making sessions will also be held, on Tuesday, June 12 (3.30–4.30pm) at Darfield, Leeston and Lincoln Libraries and from 4pm to 5pm at Rolleston Library. Another round of star-making will take place at all libraries on Saturday, June 23 (10.30–11.30am).
