Rolleston misses out on first win

by Kent Caddick

Rolleston narrowly missed out on recording its first win of the Combined Country rugby season with a loss to Prebbleton on Saturday.

Playing on home soil Rolleston started the better off of the two sides, and a converted try to Joshua Baird gave the home side a 7–0 lead, which it held through to halftime.

Prebbleton struck early in the second spell with an unconverted try, but two penalties pushed Rolleston’s lead out to 13–5 before the visitors hit their straps, running in four unanswered tries to take the match and the points 27–13.

The win leaves Prebbleton in third place on the points table in Section B, one point behind Rakaia, which thumped Hornby 64–5, and three points behind section leaders Darfield which downed Oxford 38–18.

In Section A Waihora tops the table after a 68–28 spanking of Ashley, while defending champions Southbridge hold down the third spot, having played a game less following a close-fought 32–30 over Lincoln, which slipped to fourth on the table after the loss.

The combined Burnham Dunsandel Irwell (BDI) side is now two points behind Lincoln following its 46–25 win over Hampstead.
