Inaugural memorial trophy winner

West Melton’s Peter Fitzgerald has been named as the inaugural winner of the Malvern Tennis Sub-Association’s M G Begg Memorial Trophy.
The trophy has been named in honour of the late Malcolm Begg, who was a long-serving member of the Kirwee Tennis Club and represented Malvern at Browning Shield and Veteran’s levels for many years.
“For most of his life, Malcolm contributed greatly to the development of the Kirwee Club and was a strong advocate for tennis in Malvern,” Malvern Tennis secretary, Sally Jenkins said.
The M G Begg Memorial Trophy is awarded to a person, nominated by their club, in recognition of them making a significant contribution to tennis in the Malvern district.
“The trophy can be awarded for a wide range of things including playing, administration, organising a competition or event, fundraising or any activity where a club believes an individual has contributed in a significant way to tennis in our region,” Ms Jenkins said.
The inaugural winner, Peter Fitzgerald, the West Melton Club’s delegate to Malvern Tennis, has represented Malvern in the inter-region Browning Shield competition and Veteran tennis matches, as well as organising players for the veteran teams. He has represented and selected Canterbury Country Veterans teams at both local and national levels. In his nomination form from the West Melton Tennis Club, it said: ‘Peter had been involved with West Melton tennis juniors and organising Malvern junior rep teams. In January, he has organised and managed the annual Malvern Veterans fundraiser tournament in Kirwee.
‘Peter uses his forthright personality, organises working bees, offers his best advice, and has shown a great willingness to help players, all this for the betterment of tennis in the Malvern district.’
There was more celebration for the West Melton Club recently when it was awarded the President’s Grade trophy for the 2017–18 season.
West Melton White took out the title with 144 points with Weedons Blue second and Weedons Green third.
