Children’s Day also a birthday party

The Selwyn Parenting Network will officially mark its fifth birthday with a Children’s Day event in Rolleston this Sunday.

The free community event for Selwyn families, caregivers and children will be held for the first time at Foster Park on Sunday, March 4, with previous events at Rolleston Domain.

The Selwyn Parenting Network (SPN) became an incorporated society five years ago and while its actual fifth birthday was back in November, SPN chose to mark the milestone date on Children’s Day.

SPN coordinator Kate Webb said each year Children’s Day, which is held on the first Sunday of March, provides New Zealanders with an opportunity to celebrate and give time to children.

“This has proved to be the perfect day for Selwyn Parenting Network to put on its flagship annual free event and provide an opportunity for families, and communities to celebrate and nurture our children.

“The day is as much a celebration of children, as an opportunity to engage all of New Zealand to think about their responsibility to support the lives of tamariki in their communities. And this year, we get to showcase the fabulous new park facilities through hosting our event at Foster Park.”

She said SPN was established with a vision to create strong, connected, confident and caring families, whanau and communities in Selwyn. “With its charitable not-for-profit status, SPN provides effective collaboration between a wide range of specific community groups and parenting organisations, to enhance the well-being of families and strengthen communities.

“We have a very strong and varied knowledge base within our dedicated team of volunteers, committee and part-time staff, all of whom create an incredible infrastructure of connected resources for parents and caregivers.

“We are all parents ourselves, with first-hand experience of the need to reach out for specific advice, support, guidance and help across a broad spectrum of parenting needs, from birth right through to parenting young adults.

“We have forged incredibly strong working partnerships with some of the best providers in our Selwyn District, and are able to signpost many parents to these extraordinary organisations and resources.”

The SPN flagship Children’s Day event has proved to be a popular celebration over the years, providing all communities in Selwyn with an opportunity to come together and enjoy a range of free activities and entertainment, including free bouncy castles, sausage sizzles, pony rides, magic shows, face painting, sports activities, and music.

“We are indebted to our incredible community supporters, sponsors and volunteers who devote their time and energy leading up to, and on the day.” More information on this year’s free SPN Children’s Day family event can be found at
