Perfect post for new RSM

by Mike Isle

Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, 2/4 Battalion, stationed at Burnham Military Camp, has a new regimental sergeant major.

He is Warrant Officer Class One Shane McClay and, with his wide range of outdoor interests, it seems Warrant Officer McClay sees Burnham as the perfect posting.

“I have been posted here before. I know a lot about the district, I know what it has to offer, and I am delighted that my family and I have been able to return to live here,” he said.

After completing basic training he was posted to 2nd/1st Battalion in Burnham, the first of several postings in and around our area.

At the end of 1998, he was posted to the Second Canterbury Regiment based in Timaru where he was promoted to staff sergeant.

In 2003, he joined the Regional Training Wing. He remained there until 2005 before being posted back to his battalion in Burnham as a company quartermaster sergeant.

Warrant Officer McClay has also been deployed and served with distinction overseas. He was in the second rotation to Bosnia as a section command, then deployed to East Timor before serving in Afghanistan.

After his return from Afghanistan, he attained his current rank of warrant officer class one.

“The Army is my life and has been since leaving school,” he said.

However, the personable new RSM has interests outside of his military career. He enjoys outdoor running, biking, hunting, fishing, skiing and surfing.

In fact, just about everything Burnham has on its doorstep for its military camp’s newest RSM.
