Pool repairs leave options open

by Andy Bryenton

It’s the busiest time of year for aquatic sports and recreation, but it’s also the best time of year for maintenance staff to make necessary repairs to the 25 metre long lap pool at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston.

The need to replace damaged tiles is at the heart of the matter, spurring a brief closure of the lap swimming pool from January 17, through to January 19. Despite only a small number of tiles needing replacement, completing the work to the highest standard requires draining the entire pool. Everything will be back in order for Saturday, January 20 meaning that in the three-day window of repairs, swimmers have the option to relocate to other community pools.

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre’s other popular attractions will remain open throughout the repair process, with only the lap pool affected. That’s great news for the many families enjoying a dip in the summer weather, as well as kids learning to swim and those making use of the centre’s hydrotherapy facilities.

With repairs finished well before the end of the month, the schedule for swim school — starting in time for school term one on January 29 — remains uninterrupted. In other pool news, the big Southbridge Pool Party is about to happen again on January 28, following up on massively popular fun days in 2016 and 2017 alike. It’s free to come along and join in with a sausage sizzle, games, pool inflatables and more for the whole family. Come along to the community pool in Southbridge from 2pm to 4 pm to get amongst it.
