Leeston in playoff for national title shot
by Kent Caddick
Unbeaten Leeston-Southbridge and defending champions Sefton will meet in a one-off showdown this weekend to determine which countryside will battle for a place at the national club cricket championships in Auckland.
Both sides had wins on Saturday in the latest round of the CRV Ambreed Country Premier one day competition.
Southbrook, batting first against Leeston-Southbridge in Leeston, was in early trouble but some handy contributions from Shanan Stewart and Tom Rodden got the visitors through to 152 before being bowled out in the 37th over.
In reply, the combined side knocked off the meagre total, with Liam O’Sullivan’s unbeaten half-century leading them home in the 41st over with six wickets in hand.
At Weedons Domain, Sefton’s made 212/7 in their allotted 45 overs, with Lochie Stove being the best of the Weedons attack, finishing with 3/31 off eight overs.
Despite a half century from Josh Watson Weedons crumbled under pressure to lose by 13 runs with four overs to spare. In other matches, Darfield-South Malvern (DSM) beat Cheviot and Oxford-Rangiora overcame Lincoln. Short scorecard: Southbrook 152 (S. Stewart 30, T. Rodden 41; C. Norton 3/17, D. Munro 3/20) lost to Leeston-Southbridge 154/4 (L. O’Sullivan 51no, D. Munro 39; D. Boyle 2/40); Sefton 212/7 (N. Granger 65no, T. Harrison 63, O. Bragg 32, B. Fleming 20; L. Stove 3/31, D.
