Work to begin on community centre

West Melton’s new $5.8 million community and recreation centre took a significant step forward this week with the blessing of the site.

Construction of the new community and recreation centre on West Melton Domain is expected to begin at the end of this month and take about 11 months to complete.

West Melton Community and Recreation Centre Committee chair, Bruce Russell, said the blessing was an opportunity for the community to celebrate the hard work that has gone into making the new facility a reality.

“I’m really proud of the way West Melton residents got behind this project and helped this four-year project come to fruition,” Mr Russell said.

“We received a Rata Foundation grant of $250,000 and the community itself raised $120,000 towards the new facility.

“The Committee is absolutely delighted to see construction begin on a modern facility that our growing community deserves to have.”

The multipurpose community and recreation facility will help to ease the pressure facing local community and sporting groups, and replaces the old community hall which sustained damage in the 2010 earthquake.

In addition to the recreational facilities such as a full-size indoor sports court which can be used for a number of activities including basketball, netball, badminton and futsal, the new facility will also accommodate gymnastics and dance as well as have a number of community use rooms, including a large digital seminar and learning suite.

The new centre will be the new base for Plunket, the West Melton Scout group and the West Melton Playcentre.

The new building will be able to hold around 550 people and will also be available to corporate and private groups for hire.
