Lincoln aiming for five in a row

by Kent Caddick

Lincoln will be aiming for its fifth successive Selwyn premier netball title when it takes on Broadfield in the 2017 final this coming weekend.

Lincoln, which is also on track for its second successive season without a loss, cruised into the final with a commanding 78-29 win over Southbridge at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday.

Such was the commanding nature of the win, Lincoln was also able to give some of its more junior players court time in the win over Southbridge.

Broadfield on the other hand had to come from behind to earn its place in the final in a thoroughly entertaining match against Greenpark.

Little could separate the sides throughout the season and Saturday’s semi final was no different.

It was almost two minutes before the first goal was scored in the match, such was the competitive nature of the clash.

However, once on the board Greenpark started to ease in front and ended the first quarter ahead 13-8.

Greenpark was able to maintain that five goal advantage in the second quarter, although in a sign of things to come Broadfield had closed the gap to a single goal at one stage during the quarter.

During the third quarter Broadfield was able to draw level but as the quarter came to a close Greenpark had edged in front again 40-38.

With nine minutes to go Broadfield took the lead for the first time in the match and tenaciously hung on to take the match 56-53 and book its place in the final which will get underway at 1.30pm this Saturday.

Lincoln will also contest the Premier 2 grade final after its B team overcame Dunsandel 50-25 in the semis. In the final Lincoln B will meet Burnham which ousted West Melton 55-51 in the other semi.
