Open mic for Rolleston

by Kent Caddick

The Rolleston Rugby Club will play host to an open mic night which aims to encourage Selwyn musicians to display their talent.

The open mic night is the brainchild of Duncan Sole from the Ministry of the Mind Music.

“We started these open mic nights in 2012 to give the Selwyn locals somewhere to meet, discuss, listen to and play music,” Mr Sole said.

“Since then we have put on over 100 events in the Selwyn district.”

He said the event is for musicians of all ages and experience.

“All the gear is provided and all people have do is turn up and have a go. We have had everything from solo artists to full choirs to heavy metal bands.

“The nights are popular with people who have never played live. A lot of these people come down with a guitar and a friend or two for support and get up and give their very first live performance. We have seen a lot of people develop and even go on to form bands based on their participation in these open mic nights.

“It is a supportive environment, no one is judging and everyone is there because they either love playing or love listening to live music.”

The open mic night will be held at the Rolleston Rugby Club on Friday, September 8 starting at 7pm, with people able to bring their own food and drink. For more information people can check out the Ministry of the Mind Music facebook page or contact Duncan Sole on 0277 028 345 or email,
