Consultation on speed limit changes

The Selwyn District Council is to consult locals on proposed speed limit changes which would introduce lower speed limits on a number of roads across the district.

The proposals include extending 50kmh and 70kmh zones on the outskirts of several townships, and introducing an 80kmh limit on rural roads adjoining the Christchurch city boundary, including Maddisons Rd and extending out to Tai Tapu, Lincoln and Rolleston.

The 80kmh speed limit on rural roads in the Prebbleton area would also be extended out to Lincoln and Rolleston.

The proposed changes follow a review of speed limits across the district carried out by council staff. In his report to council, SDC roading engineer Mark Chamberlain said the proposed changes reflect the growth in population and traffic volumes in many Selwyn townships.

“The roads reviewed included those requested by residents, committees and councillors, as well as others identified by staff. “

Townships where lower speed limits are proposed to be extended include Castle Hill, Leeston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, Rolleston, Rolleston Izone, and West Melton.

The proposed changes are expected to go out for public consultation next month.
