Rep season heats up

by Kent Caddick

With the club season at an end Selwyn rugby fans have turned their attention to the representative season.

Both Canterbury Country and Ellesmere were in action over the weekend, with Country travelling to Wyndham to take on Southland Country, while Ellesmere faced up to the Cantabrians, a Canterbury U20 development side, at West Melton Domain.

Canterbury Country, which is made up of players from the Ellesmere and North Canterbury sub-unions were involved in a tight tussle with their Southland opposites, and at the end of the 80 minutes nothing separated the sides with a final score of 28-28.

Both sides scored four tries each in the match with Daryl Lambourn, Harry Pankhurst, Mark Maitland and Brook Retallick crossing the tryline for Canterbury. Retallick added four conversions.

Canterbury Country’s next match is against Tasman B in Nelson this weekend with matches against Otago B in Dunsandel, Metro and Otago Country to follow.

Meanwhile, Ellesmere, without some of its key players away on duty with Canterbury Country, started well in its match against the Cantabrians in West Melton.

After conceding an early try Ellesmere responded with tries to Alex Parker and Lance Meikle to take the lead.

Two late first half tries to the Canterbury side saw it go into the halftime break leading 21-14.

However, while Parker scored another try, the Cantabrians ran away with the match in the second spell, winning 57-19.
