Off-roaders ready to race

Selwyn off-road enthusiasts will be heading to West Melton early next month for a Canterbury Off-road Racing Club event.

The event to be held at the club’s Weedons Ross Road track will be held on Sunday, August 6 and is the final South Island short course event before the National finals which will be held in Nelson in October.

There will be several different classes of vehicle involved in the racing, ranging from the small kids trophy trucks (50cc engines) through to the big V8 truck class. Between races the Canterbury ATV Club will be putting on a display of quad bike racing.

CORC president Gavin Storer said they are working to make the sport more family orientated.

“Off-road racing has traditionally been seen as a male dominated sport however we are endeavouring to focus on the family aspect of racing.

“We actively promote both youth and female participation both on and off the track, and the club is spending this season trying to create a more family orientated culture.

“We already see a community style culture in the pits during racing, with everyone and anyone lending a hand to those that need it, and we want to build on this.” Racing starts at 10.30am and some lucky spectators will get the chance to experience the thrill of offroad racing with a number of ‘Spectator Ride Along’ prizes up for grabs.

More information on the event can be found on the Canterbury Off-Road Racing Club website, www.dirt.org.nz.
