Darfield gets home semi

Darfield and Southbridge have secured home semi-finals after the final round-robin matches in the Ellesmere division one rugby competition were played on Sunday.

With competition leader’s Waihora sitting out the final round with a bye Darfield and defending champion’s Southbridge seized their opportunities to leap-frog Waihora to claim home ground advantage for the semis.

The shocking weather conditions on Saturday forced the cancellation of all matches but the crucial division one matches between Darfield and Rolleston, and Southbridge against Prebbleton, were transferred to Sunday.

Southbridge secured top spot heading into the semis with a 22-13 win over Prebbleton, which finished the round-robin competition in fourth place meaning it will face Southbridge again this weekend in the semis.

Darfield meanwhile thumped Rolleston 70-0 in its match which had been transferred to Darfield following the closure of the Rolleston ground.

The home side raced out to a 32-0 lead by halftime and continued to pile on the points in the second half.

The wins for Darfield and Southbridge meant both sides finished on 34 points after the round-robin, with Southbridge earning top spot due to its better points differential.
