Design student Kirsty Cochrane has been awarded the 2017 West Melton Scholarship.
The former West Melton School pupil was presented with the scholarship by Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall at a recent ceremony at West Melton School.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a former student of West Melton School who is a final year student enrolled in a tertiary institution. Kirsty is in her final year of a Degree in Spatial Design at AUT.
She said ‘spatial design’ is best defined as ‘architecture without the engineering’, and is especially interested in designing for disadvantaged people.
Kirsty recognised her parents for encouraging her to follow her interests and credited her teachers at Riccarton High School and West Melton for their guidance and encouragement.
Deputy mayor Malcolm Lyall said it was very important to recognise excellence because well trained people are essential to the community.
Applications are called for later in the year, and the West Melton Scholarship and Awards Committee meets in February to assess the applications.
