New play area opened

A group of Lincoln University students have officially opened a new playground they designed for a local preschool.
The students from Lincoln’s School of Landscape Architecture spent a year on the project for the Lincoln University Early Childhood Centre (LUECC), which involved preparing plans for a landscape concept and planting design, then constructing a sandpit and wet play area.
They also produced a mud kitchen which the children have renamed the ‘Master Chef’ kitchen. LUECC coordinator Marilyn Montgomery said the project first came about when the centre identified a need to relocate the sandpit from its current position.
“We are participants in Enviroschools which is grounded in environmental education,” she said.
“When looking to redesign our outdoor area, we wanted to reach out to the community as participants in the children’s learning.”
