Darfield in command
by Kent Caddick
Recently crowned Canterbury Country rugby champions Southbridge has kicked off the defence of its Ellesmere division one title with a loss to Waihora.
In a repeat of last season’s Ellesmere final, the Tai Tapu-based Waihora extracted revenge for that loss taking the match 29-24.
Darfield began its title tilt with a commanding 54-10 win over West Melton although the ‘Westies’ matched Darfield in the first quarter of the match.
As the game progressed Darfield exerted its control in all facets of the game to run out convincing winners.
Lincoln, which like Darfield made the Canterbury Country semi-finals this year, was also a big winner in its match against the combined Burnham Dunsandel Irwell team, running out convincing winners 57-10.
In the other match of the first round of the Ellesmere competition, Prebbleton was in full command of its clash against Rolleston, racking up 41 unanswered points.
Results: Waihora 29 v Southbridge 24; Darfield 54 v West Melton 10; Prebbleton 41 v Rolleston 0; BDI 10 v Lincoln 57; Hornby-bye.
