Westland Milk Products has appointed Chinese national Gary Yu to lead its Shanghai-based team in China.
Westland Milk’s chief executive Toni Brendish said Mr Yu will champion the drive by New Zealand’s second biggest dairy co-operative to strengthen its dairy-based nutritionals market in China and gain a larger share of the burgeoning Chinese foodservice market.
“Westland has a strong foothold in China with its nutritional products, including infant formula,” Ms Brendish said.
“Gary has extensive on-the-ground experience of key account management, marketing and supply logistics and forming innovative partnerships with Chinese commercial customers.
“This will be invaluable for Westland to make sure our nutritionals foundation remains strong and opportunities for its expansion are realised.”
Ms Brendish said Westland will also be able to take advantage of Yu’s experience in the foodservice industry in China.
“China’s bakery industry has developed rapidly in recent years, with growing per capita consumption levels of baked goods.
“Gary has grassroots experience of the demands of local consumers. Under his leadership Westland will accelerate its expansion in the foodservice market to provide more products to our customers, creating better business value while strengthening our return to shareholders.” Prior to joining Westland, Mr Yu was managing director for Griffith Laboratories (Greater China) and he also worked at Coca-Cola (China) Beverage Limited and Unilever Bestfoods China.
