Selwyn Lions Club representative Naomi Scott from Ellesmere College finished runner up in the recent Lions Emerging Speech Competition held in Christchurch.
Competitors were asked to give a prepared five minute speech and one minute to prepare for an impromptu speech with a set topic.
First place went to Raphael Franks from Christchurch Boys High School and third place to Sarah Casey from Rangi Ruru Girls School, with head judge, Sister Leonie O’Neil, commenting on the high standard of all competitors. Selwyn Lions Club first vice-president Alison Benefield said they were delighted by Naomi’s success.
She said Selwyn Lions are still looking for young people aged between 17 and 20 years of age to enter the upcoming Young Speechmaker Competition, which for the national winner has a travel package to the United States and Canada as its prize.
“This is an international competition and the winner from the District competition will go to the national finals and we would be happy to sponsor anyone who wishes to participate.”
The District Competition is to be held on Friday, June 9 in Christchurch and entries will be received up until Tuesday, June 6.
