Selwyn shows off musical talent

Rehearsals are underway for a major collaborative musical event happening in Selwyn in July.

Lincoln woman June Burney is behind the ‘Celebration of Screen and Stage’ concert which she said will provide an opportunity for residents of Selwyn to see what a diverse range of musical talent there is in the district.

Mrs Burney said while there have been events like Selwyn Sounds there has been nothing which features Selwyn-only performers and this is an opportunity for those groups to come together and showcase their talent.

The concert will feature performances from members of the local musical theatre group the Kirwee Players, the 50-member strong Selwyn Community Choir, Selwyn Youth Choir and the Ellesmere Pipe Band.

“In addition local band Algal Bloom will perform along with various talented duos and individual artists from Selwyn including a group of Lincoln High School students who have formed a musical theatre group.”

She said it’s not a profit making venture and if there is any money left over it will go back to the artists who have given their time to perform. “I was lucky to get some support from the Selwyn Creative Communities fund to get this going.

“I have no idea what the response will be like but it is an opportunity for local people to see a variety of local usicians perform in one concert.”

The musical items will include songs from a wide range of musicals and movies everything from such classics as The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Les MIserables and Grease to James Bond, the Blues Brothers and Disney hits.

“There’s a wide variety of music on offer and participants in the performances range from primary school children to retirees,” Mrs Burney said.

The ‘Celebration of Screen and Stage’ concert will be held in the Lincoln High School Hall on Saturday July 22, starting at 7pm.

Tickets, which cost $15, are on sale at Lincoln and Rolleston Hammer Hardware stores, the Lincoln Market and via More information can be found on the Sing Out Selwyn Facebook page.
