Young speechmakers wanted
by Kent Caddick
The Selwyn Lions Club is encouraging local young people to enter one of two Youth Speechmaker Competitions being run next month.
The first competition is the ‘Emerging Speechmaker’ contest, a local district competition, and the second the internationally run ‘Young Speechmaker’ competition.
Selwyn Lions first vice-president Alison Benefield said one of the driving forces for the Lions clubs is to encourage today’s youth into becoming tomorrow’s leaders.
“These speechmaker contests help with personal development, giving young people the opportunity to develop the skills they need to become leaders.
“The ‘Emerging Speechmaker’ contest is something we run as a district while those taking part in the international Young Speechmaker’ have the opportunity to compete overseas.”
She said all entrants must be sponsored by a Lions Club and Selwyn Lions can assist in finding a club to sponsor any entrant who does not have their own contact.
The ‘Emerging Speechmaker’ contest is run in two divisions, for school Years 9–10 and Years 11–12, and will be held in Christchurch in May. In the Young Speechmaker competition the winner of the Selwyn district will go on to national finals with the overall national winner taking out a travel package to the United States and Canada.
First runner-up will receive a trip to Australia and second runner-up a placement at the Lions International Youth Camp in Rotorua later this year.
Entries for both competitions close on May 15 and anyone interested in these competitions should contact Alison Benefield on 03 347 8618 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
